I wish to 'Capture' a VHS Tape and edit it and produce on a DVD. I have PowerDirector 10.
My attempts to date have included a direct interface between VCR machine and computer (PowerDirector could not recognise the data and therefore not 'capture' the data). My second attempt was to interface my Sony (smalll tape) video camera to the computer using DV cable. I set the video camera to DV Out and PowerDirector could recognise the video camera but rather than capturing the VHS feed frim my VCR it kept seeking the video camera tape to 'Capture'.
Can somebody please help me.
Cheers.

Neil, thanks for your adviice.
Does this tell me that I first need to convert the VHS tape to a DVD format before I can use PowerDirector 10 to edit and produce a DVD ?

Aug 24, 2012 07:00 Hi AUSSIE KEVIN ,
You first have to bring the VHS content onto a PC changing a tape recording to an electronic format. I've used a Kworld device in the past, There are a number of devices around that use a USB/RCA hook up to a player.
Capturing to the DVD format is your best option. VHS is little better than VCD quality, so don't have high expectations of crisp resolution.
Issues you will encounter:
1. Video noise being read as a commercial encryption. Monitor your capture and do not record for long periods.
2. With VHS capture you have an analogue file and the data is on a separate stream, this will lead to audio and video becoming out of sync. Capture to shortish sections, live with the issue and use the video editor later to align the audio.
3. Frame drop-age - part of item 2. Shortish capture, monitoring and being careful. An unavoidable hassle with VHS. The USB hookup has helped overcome this somewhat when previously we had a PCI card and RCA connections.
4. Computer used: Make sure it's up to date with all drivers and is powerful enough to render at the time of capture to DVD.
Just a few heads up bits of info.
Dafydd

What happened if you put a blank tape in the camcorder but did not press record? Look at your camcorder manual for 'pass through' instructions. .

SteveK,
Good question.........
Although PowerDirector will show the VHS video it will only let me record if there is a tape inserted in the camera - and tells me so through a dialogue box. And when it does begin to record it takes over the camera and records what the camers sees through the lens (usually the inside of the camera cap!).
The camcorder manual tells me I have set up the 'pass through' menu settings and cabled correctly.

What camcorder do you have? Perhaps I can find the manual and find something in it that is not obvious.
Did you try the other tact. Put the camcorder in the record mode and then pause it and play the D=VHS tape? .

All,
Thanks for your support in this.
I have purchased the Gadget Geek and it works perfectly. The software installation was a challenge (eg manuals did not load) but the capture works and I can edit using PowerDirector 10.
I can now hammer the hours of home videos I have into dvd's and keep in a more user friendly format.
Cheers,
Kevin

As usual, CyberLink has done it again and provided the Audio/Video editing community with a very powerful solution to editing with their PowerDirector. Not only has the program been a roaring success, but PC Magazine rating gave it its highest rating among all of the competitors.

The software is an absolute jewel for YouTube directors and home users alike. Whether you're creating a movie to show off to the world or you're creating a family scrapbook comprised of home movies, CyberLink's PowerDirector Ultra will provide you with great features for editing High Definition movies including Bluray, DVD and CD burning support.

PowerDirector can import and handle almost every type of currently popular video format and does a great job of adding effects to your videos along with text and transitions.

CyberLink goes ahead and beyond what is required of such a program and offers users an online community called DirectorZone. With that, you can download oodles of additional effects, transitions, menus and access tutorials on producing stunning video presentations.

A review of PowerDirector wouldn't be complete without mentioning the 3D aspect of video editing which CyberLink has integrated into this wonderful program. With the growth in 3D movies, players and television sets, 3D video has been making its mark. With the introduction of 3D video on mobile phones, the trend is growing even faster and that's where the competition of PowerDirector fall behind. It fully supports conversion between 2D and 3D formats and provides users with great 3D effects.

Without futher mention of the cool video effects you can create, PowerDirector also provides some very professional audio effects including the Audio Beat Marker which can find points in the audio track where beats occur, perfect for synchornizing audio and video effects.

CyberLink PowerDirector is overall a very powerful and familiar program. It features simple icons and straight-forward interfaces to complete many useful tasks on video. It is fast and provides anybody with the proper tools to become a successful YouTube director.

CyberLink PowerDirector can make YouTube movies, edit videos and add effects to videos.
